Treyarch Studio Head Mark Gordon to Retire

Gordon, at the Call of Duty studio since 2005 and its head since 2016, is stepping down to focus on his next chapter, with Kevin Hendrickson and Yale Miller taking over as co-heads.

Mark Gordon, the studio head of Call of Duty developer Treyarch, is retiring after more than two decades at the studio, Treyarch announced on June 15. Gordon joined Treyarch in 2005 and had led it since 2016.

Kevin Hendrickson, the studio’s chief operating officer, and Yale Miller, its director of production, will take over as co-studio heads, the studio said. Treyarch said Gordon was stepping down “to focus on his next chapter,” according to VGChartz.

Gordon worked on Call of Duty across his time at Treyarch, from 2005’s Call of Duty 2: Big Red One and Call of Duty 3 to 2008’s World at War and the Black Ops series, Insider Gaming noted. The studio called his impact on the franchise “immeasurable.”

Treyarch, founded in 1996, is one of Call of Duty’s lead developers and created the series’ Zombies mode and its Black Ops sub-franchise. The studio is part of Activision, which Microsoft acquired in 2023. The companies did not tie Gordon’s retirement to the wider round of Xbox gaming layoffs reported this month.

Hendrickson and Miller each bring what the studio called “decades of development and leadership experience” to the role, Treyarch said. The two will share the studio-head position going forward.
