Fable to have 1,000+ NPCs with 100 human actors

Playground Games said at Summer Game Fest that around 100 actors recorded the role-playing game's "Living Population" with no AI text-to-speech, as the reboot firmed its release for February 23, 2027.

Playground Games said every one of Fable’s more than 1,000 non-player characters is voiced by a human actor, with no AI text-to-speech, confirming the approach during a group Q&A at Summer Game Fest, as per GameSpot.

Around 100 actors recorded dialogue for the open-world role-playing game’s “Living Population,” and all of its handcrafted NPCs are fully voiced, the studio said. Asked whether Fable used an Arc Raiders-style text-to-speech system, a developer said there was “no generation involved in it.”

The recording effort was large. Playground designer Will Kennedy said the game contains more than 150,000 lines of dialogue, recorded with multiple studios running “in parallel for over 1000 hours just this year alone”. Kennedy said the team handcrafted the more than 1,000 NPCs that players can meet, each with jobs, homes, and daily routines.

The confirmation comes as AI voice work in games draws scrutiny. Embark Studios used AI text-to-speech for some dialogue in Arc Raiders, drew criticism from players, and later recorded additional lines with human actors, according to GamingBolt.

Playground also confirmed Fable’s release date. The reboot will launch on February 23, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, the studio said at the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7. Xbox moved the game from a fall 2026 window in late May, after an earlier delay from 2025 to 2026, as GamesRadar noted. Chief content officer Matt Booty said Xbox wanted the game to have “a window of its own,” a move the outlet linked to avoiding the November launch of Grand Theft Auto VI.

Fable will arrive on Xbox Game Pass on launch day, with a Premium Edition granting early access from February 18. It is the first new entry in the series since Lionhead Studios’ tenure ended, and the first Fable to release on a PlayStation console. Hayley Atwell voices the game’s main villain.
