The director of Final Fantasy VII Revelation has called video game streaming “a bit of a crisis” for role-playing games, yet the viewership and sales records of the genre’s biggest releases point the other way. Naoki Hamaguchi told the site 4Gamer on June 7 that some fans may watch a stream, feel satisfied, and never buy the game, in comments translated by Automaton. Among the RPGs that draw the largest streaming audiences, more viewers have tracked with more sales, not fewer. The clearest test case, Hamaguchi’s own Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, was streamed less than its rivals, and Square Enix has tied its shortfall to other causes.
Hamaguchi spoke while promoting Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the conclusion of the remake trilogy, which Square Enix announced at Summer Game Fest in June for a Spring 2027 release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and PC. He called the prospect “not something game creators can wholeheartedly celebrate” and said the answer is to design RPGs with enough branching choices that one playthrough cannot replace playing. He added that he was not dismissing streamers or streaming.
The most-streamed RPGs are also the best-selling

Elden Ring, the most-streamed game FromSoftware has made, is also the best-selling premium RPG of the decade. It drew about 910,000 concurrent Twitch viewers at its February 2022 launch, topping every other category that week, and FromSoftware and Bandai Namco reported 30 million copies sold by April 2025. Its Shadow of the Erdtree expansion sold five million copies in three days in June 2024, during the heaviest streaming week in the series’ history.
Baldur’s Gate 3 followed the same pattern. It reached about 481,000 concurrent Twitch viewers at its August 2023 launch and has since passed 20 million sales. Larian boss Swen Vincke credited word of mouth as the studio’s core marketing, saying, “Our marketing strategy was word of mouth.” For Larian, the streaming Hamaguchi describes as a risk was the plan.
The Souls audience also watches for different reasons than a story-driven RPG’s. Elden Ring’s launch peak roughly tripled Dark Souls III’s, and much of that viewing centers on boss fights, challenge runs, and players studying encounters before attempting them. That viewing follows from the difficulty of playing, which makes watching a prelude to playing rather than a replacement for it.
Rebirth was streamed less, not more

The game that prompted Hamaguchi’s concern drew a smaller streaming audience than the titles above. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth peaked near 160,000 viewers across platforms at its February 2024 launch and gathered about 8.1 million hours watched in its opening week, against roughly 75 million for Elden Ring’s first week. Square Enix has never published unit sales for Rebirth, but it told investors the title underperformed profit expectations in the year ending March 2025.
The reasons Square Enix and analysts have given do not center on streaming. Rebirth launched only on PlayStation 5, a smaller base than the PlayStation 4 that carried 2020’s Final Fantasy VII Remake, and it was a middle-chapter sequel, a position that tends to sell below an opening installment. Square Enix’s response was to drop exclusivity, and Revelation ships on every major platform at once. That fix addresses access and structure, not viewers.
So why the worry?
The strongest angle of Hamaguchi’s case sits upon how habits have shifted. MIDiA Research reported that in 2024 gamers averaged 8.5 hours a week watching gaming content and 7.4 hours playing. Stream Hatchet found that role-playing games grew from 3 percent of all streaming hours in 2020 to 7 percent in 2024. Linear, spoiler-sensitive stories are easier to absorb by watching than games built around player input, and no public data measures how many people who might have bought Rebirth watched a stream instead. On that narrow ground, the concern holds.
The likeliest read on the evidence so far is that streaming amplifies sales for RPGs deep enough to reward playing and substitutes for them mainly where a game is both linear and hard to reach. Hamaguchi’s own remedy fits that read. Final Fantasy VII Revelation answers Rebirth’s two clearest problems are adding branching content and launching on every platform at once, a bet that depth and access, rather than streamers, decide whether players pick up the controller.
